August Fishing Report

August Fishing Report

This past weekend Dad and I had our annual canal fishing trip.  We organised my mate Hunter and my dad's mate, Tony, to come with us this time. We did a mixture of egg rolling which went really well, with my mate ending up with a 18lb rainbow that he released.  Dad got a nice 6lb salmon that we kept for the smoker. We also used some Shimano spoons that Mark gave me to try out, they worked well too.

We started on Ohau B and dad got a nice salmon, a few hours later we ended up heading to Ohau A where the current was a lot faster, so we decided to do some egg rolling and BOOM Hunter got a 18lber on a lick’ em lures dead egg 6mm.  You can get these from Southern Wild - pop in to see Mark to get yourself some of these killer eggs!

We had to move around a few different places to find the right amount of flow so we could do some egg rolling.  You need a decent flow to get your eggs and small weighted sinker to get to the bottom and bounce along past their noses. The fish are spawning in the canals at present and the flows are great. In the slow water we fished with some 1/12th and 1/8th  jigheads to get to the bottom where the fish were holding.

Tight lines everyone

Cheers Louie ‘the fish’ Macandrew
