Wow, the new season is finally upon us. I have been lucky enough to get out both Fly Fishing and Softbaiting a lot over the past few weeks and have landed browns and rainbows in amazing condition.
Heavy, well weighted, nymphs in sizes 12 and 14 with a hot spot have worked well on the streams I have been fly fishing on. I have also managed a couple of fish on size 14 Parachute Adams Dry Flies in the late afternoons on the Clutha. The Soft Baits I have had the most success on are the Berkley Pumpkin Grub tail and the Black and Gold Paddle Tail with different weighted Jig Heads depending on where the fish are holding in the rivers I have been fishing.
I recently respooled my Shimano Vanford 2500 size with Berkley Pro Spec 6lb and wow I am stoked as I have had no tangles at all and casting so much further than my old braid. Mark, at Southern, Wild, has a good selection of Berkley Soft Baits in great colors that will work in any situations around Central Otago and on the Canals also we recently had a good trip to the Coast, landing some great Kahawai and a couple of super condition Trout but speaking to the Whitebaiters it sounds like there isn't much Whitebait being caught. The Backcountry Rivers open soon so get out there and enjoy it!!
Tight Lines everyone
