September Fishing Report

September Fishing Report

Well the fishing season is about to start and boy am I really looking forward to it!

The days are warming up nicely and so is the fishing!

I have been mostly fishing around the lake edges on both lakes Wanaka and Hawea and we have been catching some really nice brown trout in good condition. The rainbows are still not really back from spawning yet and many are still up the rivers.

The best soft bait pattern we have used is the Berkley Powerbait Pumpkin Seed Colour and the Z-Man Bloodworm and Motor Oil have been great also.

Flies that have been successful have been Olive Woolly Buggers, Hamills Killers and Dad's Killer Red Bead Damselfly that I've been stealing from his fly box lol.

The salmon will start to show up in October in Lake Hawea and that is awesome fun. Lures to use are Silver, Green and Red Prism Hex Wobblers as the salmon are attracted to the bright colours and also pink and chartreuse soft baits on a 1/6th -1/12th Jig head with a deep-slow retrieve.

Mark at Southern Wild has a good selection of all of these so get in and see him.

Dad and I have a couple of great trips we are planning to Southland and then into the backcountry when the rest of the rivers in our region open.

Good luck to everyone on opening day and be safe!

Cheers
